Ideas to do at home with children with autism

The first thing we advise is to take these days of confinement with a lot of relaxation , it is not advisable to want to do many things but to jointly participate in each of the activities that the day requires, taking advantage of those moments that we often do not have to involve our children in all of them. housework . This will allow us to do homework while teaching our children simple tasks such as dressing, making the bed, preparing the table, cooking, taking a good nap, undressing, putting on a washing machine... Here are some ideas about activities to do at home . Some are integrated into our daily habits and others we can enrich for our children with disabilities.


Taking a good bath: integrating a moment a day with water, apart from offering the daily hygiene that a child needs, is a relaxing activity and generally motivates and entertains our children with autism . Activities with water can be enriched by adding kitchen objects , mud, even flour so that it is richer on a sensory level and lengthens this pleasant activity for our children. Don't forget to make foam while we fill the bath, it can also be a good time to integrate smells into the bathroom or to get involved with it and share that aquatic game.


Read stories: on many occasions we have shared with you the great richness of sharing a moment of tranquility in a specific space with appropriate materials and being able to establish that communication and that moment of interaction through stories, photos or anything that interests you. It is attractive to your child.

Making puppets: being able to make puppets of their favorite characters can enrich and increase their attention. We once again emphasize the fact that not to complicate the activities, we can play to hide the puppets and find them, make them fly, cover them with a blanket, make them choose one... or simply let the children show us what they would do with them and establish imitation of what they do as a mirror that can be a good tool to connect with them without having very pretentious objectives that later frustrate us.


Make homemade videos or funny photos: the digital tool is a unique tool in motivating children and can be a great way to share various moments with our children, they will also remain as memories of this experience and will surely capture the attention of our children. Children, we can introduce costumes, hats, I dress up as something that the child likes….


Music: we believe it is essential to integrate music into all the dynamics of the day, as a daily thread and conductor of a calm, stimulating, and fun dynamic in all these days of confinement. We can think of several interesting dynamics: The first of them is simply to play their favorite music and share with them listening and their expressiveness . We can also use music as a dance activity, choreography movement. We can even use music as moments of relaxation, in the bathroom, before going to sleep to lower the level of activity and help reduce anxiety levels from not leaving the house.


Introduce objects into the environment : balloons, soap bubbles, paper airplanes are objects that can give us very fun dynamics and a little movement in these more stationary days ahead of us.

Pillow and tickle fights cannot be missing from more family dynamics.


We can also surprise our children with a change of furniture, improvised cabins with sheets that can be very stimulating and can create an attractive space that generates entertainment.


Watching old family videos: photos can be a good time to share with the family and sometimes it is even more attractive than other people's videos and so we change the digital dynamics for something that further enriches the moment and gives it variety.


Massage: It is a good time to physically relax the body , take a good cream, good oil and do a sensory massage measuring the pressure of each of the children so that it is to their liking. We recommend that this massage be close to bedtime. Sleep ideally after bathing to help relaxation before going to bed.


It is very important throughout the day to also balance all these activities , with always supervised free time , but it is also important that they have the time to do what they like and that regulates them sensory and emotionally. Use all the rooms in the house because the spatial change is also rich and helps, which is very important throughout the day also to balance all these activities to have a more dynamic feeling of all these activities, including changes of space such as sitting on the floor standing can give great variety to these activities.
