The importance of communication in children with Non-Verbal Autism: Learn 7 practical tips

Non-verbal ASD children may have difficulty communicating with others, which can affect their ability to interact and learn. However, there are language activities for non-verbal children that encourage communication and language development, using means other than verbal speech.

It is important to keep in mind that each child is unique and each child's needs may vary. Here are some ideas for activities that might be useful to stimulate language development:

1. Visual communication:

Non-verbal children with ASD may have better visual understanding, so the use of visual aids can be very useful to communicate with them. We can use images or gestures to reinforce language. For example, if you are teaching a child the name of an object, show a picture of the object while you tell him the name.

2. Sign language

Learning some basic signs can help you communicate your needs and wants. You can start with simple words like “hello,” “goodbye,” “thank you,” and “please.” Use images or visual cards to represent each sign and practice using them in different situations.

3. Music and songs:

Music and songs can be a fun way to engage non-verbal children with ASD in language. Repetition of lyrics and melodies can help them learn new words and phrases.

4. Role plays:

Role-playing can help nonverbal children with ASD practice social and communication skills. This could include imitation games or more complex role-playing games.

5. Structured play:

Structured play can help nonverbal children with ASD develop social and communication skills. Therapists can use structured games to teach children to take turns, share, and communicate effectively. Children learn best when they are involved in fun and meaningful activities. We recommend using games and activities that involve language, such as word association games or story-telling activities.

6. Speech therapy:

Speech therapy can be a useful tool for non-verbal children with ASD. Therapists can work with them to improve their ability to communicate verbally and can also use other strategies to help them develop communication skills, such as using gestures and signs, and can also use augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems to help children to communicate effectively.

7. Collaboration with professionals:

Professionals, such as speech therapists and psychologists, can be helpful in stimulating language in children with special needs. Working collaboratively with these professionals can help ensure that best practices for language development are being used.

By using a combination of these tools, you can help children learn new communication skills and improve their ability to interact with others.

Remember to adapt these activities according to the specific needs and abilities of each child. It is also important to provide a supportive and patient environment so that children feel comfortable and motivated to participate in these non-verbal language activities.
