Take advantage of your child's interests to improve your communication

Every child is a world full of unique and exciting interests. These are not only a source of joy and entertainment, but they can also be powerful tools to encourage communication and development in children, especially those with autism. Discovering and taking advantage of what your child likes can make the difference on their path to more effective and enriching communication.

How can you take advantage of your child's interests in communication?

1. Observe and listen to their interests:

Pay attention to what really captures your child's attention. It can be a theme, a toy, an activity, or even a specific place. Notice when he is most involved and excited.

2. Incorporate your interests into activities:

Integrate your child's interests into daily activities. For example, if he loves dinosaurs, you can use dinosaurs as part of role-playing, counting activities, or even for storytelling.

3. Encourage dialogue:

Use what your child likes as a starting point for conversations. Asking questions related to your interests can motivate you to participate and communicate.

4. Expand vocabulary:

The things we are interested in often come with their own specialized vocabulary. Take advantage of this to introduce new words and concepts. For example, if he likes cars, you can teach him words like "engine," "wheels," and "accelerate."

5. Create opportunities to share your interests:

Establish moments to share with your child what interests him. It could be showing you something he likes, describing a scene, or explaining how something that fascinates him works.

6. Use visual aids:

If your child has difficulties with verbal communication, you can use visual aids such as images, pictograms or cards to represent their interests and facilitate communication.

Leveraging your child's interests to improve your communication is not only an effective strategy, but it is also a beautiful way to strengthen the bonds between you.

By showing genuine interest in what they are passionate about, you are building a path of connection and learning that can make a big difference in their development and well-being.
