What Calms Children with Autism?

As a professional therapist with over 20 years of experience working with families and professionals , I want to share with you some practical and effective strategies to calm a child with autism during an attack of aggression. I know how challenging these moments can be, however, with the right tools and approach, we can help our children feel calmer and safer.
1. Provide a Calm and Safe Environment
One of the first steps to calming a child with autism is to take him to a calm and safe environment. Removing him from the stressful environment can help reduce sensory and emotional overload.
In the VICON Method we use video modelling techniques to show children how to find and enjoy quiet spaces. This gives them a visual reference they can follow in times of stress.
2. Communicate in a Clear, Positive and Direct Manner
During a crisis, it's crucial to avoid using negative phrases. Instead of saying "don't throw yourself on the ground," try "standing up is better and makes you look taller." Positive communication helps reduce resistance and frustration.
The ABA (Applied Behavioral Analysis) methodology we use in the VICON Method includes techniques to improve effective communication, helping children understand and respond better.
3. Avoid Threats That Cannot Be Fulfilled
For children with autism, words have great value. Avoid making promises or threats that you cannot keep , as this can increase their anxiety and distrust.
In the VICON Method, we teach parents and professionals to use language effectively and consistently, ensuring that expectations and promises remain clear and achievable.
4. Use a Reward-Focused Approach
Reinforcing desired behaviors with rewards rather than punishments can be very effective. This not only motivates the child, but also fosters a positive and supportive environment.
Our methodology includes the use of positive reinforcement to encourage desired behaviors. Through interactive activities, children learn to associate good behaviors with rewards.
5. Use Body Language and Facial Expression
Body language and facial expressions can convey calm and security. Maintain a relaxed posture and reassuring facial expression to help your child feel safe.
In the VICON Method we use video modeling and sign language to show examples of calm body language and facial expressions, helping children learn and imitate these non-verbal cues.
6. Provide Distractions
Offering distractions, such as specific toys or activities, can help divert a child's attention from the stressful situation and redirect their energy toward something positive.
In the VICON Method we integrate fun and educational activities that can serve as effective distractions . We also have songs that transmit tranquility, helping children to concentrate on tasks that they like and calm them.
7. Teach Relaxation Techniques
Relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing or meditation, can be very helpful in calming a child during an aggressive outburst.
In the VICON Method we incorporate music therapy and breathing exercises, providing tools that children can use to relax and manage their stress. We also share valuable content in our monthly webinars, which can be very useful for our families and professionals.
Conclusion
Anticipating the needs of a child with autism and using effective strategies can make a big difference in their well-being.
