What's behind an ABA Intervention Program?

The acronym ABA corresponds in English to "Applied Behavior Analysis", in its translation into Spanish it means "Analysis Applied to Behavior". This intervention model comes from the USA , from the research of Dr. Ivar Lovaas, in the Department of Psychology at the University of Los Angeles-California (1987). Dr. Ivar Lovaas demonstrated that behaviors in children with autism could be modified through the ABA method. In his study he showed that the majority of children who receive ABA treatment could benefit significantly, even losing the diagnosis after years of therapy.
For us, the ABA intervention model is not only our starting point, it is the path we follow through the VICON Method videos . We use this planned, evolutionary and tested therapeutic program with a history of more than half a century of application in the learning of children with disabilities, learning difficulties and, specifically, autism.
We love this methodology because it is comprehensive, it works on all learning areas. We follow this methodology because it is and it leads us to success , placing all its emphasis on the work of the therapist, the adjustments, the dynamics that strengthen this learning and how they have to accompany the child and adapt to him at all times.
The evolution of a case following an ABA methodology is evaluated daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly and annually by a team of at least 5 professionals and the family unit. Which gives us a good idea of the control over the objectives , the procedures that are working, that are not working and all the small and large adjustments that have to be made in each particular case.
It is always a child-centered therapy and although we are an online tool we have complemented this program with daily, weekly and post-video therapeutic support , phase or level to adjust the VICON Method program to the learning styles of each child, to family dynamics that are not always the same, to the child's preferences, following a specific program but in an individualized way.
In ABA programming it allows us to divide into small steps all the evolutionary and cognitive skills necessary for growth in any area of the person. This gives us the security that each child evolves with respect to his or her level and that we do not skip intermediate steps assuming that they are already developed . On the other hand, even if we find developed aspects, going through them allows us to enhance and strengthen them to ensure a correct growth and strength in learning in the medium and long term.
An ABA model is made up of the following skills:
Of course, although each skill has its specific program within the ABA model, the transversality of each of these skills colors the entire therapy and involves many of them in a single activity. The great variety in its comprehensive treatment gives great richness to the child while making the therapy very dynamic and varied to be able to establish these intensive and extensive programs of 20 to 40 hours per week.
We hope you liked it and do not hesitate to share all your experiences and curiosities about this exciting topic, it will surely help us adapt the new publications to your doubts and requests. We continue with new chapters of the ABA intervention model later…
