How do sensory differences affect the daily life of children with autism?

Sensory sensitivities
Today we will focus on the vestibular system . The vestibular system owes its name to the vestibule, located in the inner ear, and has 3 main functions:
- Balance The vestibule is the primary organ of balance and plays a very important role in the subjective sensation of movement and orientation in the space around us.
- Posture Vestibular information received by the nervous system causes adjustments in posture and muscle activity.
- Eye Movement Vestibular information received by the nervous system helps stabilize the eyes during head movements.
VESTIBULAR SYSTEM
1. LOW SENSITIVITY
- The need to sway, spin, or other types of "strange" movements in the eyes of others, to obtain sensory information.
- Difficulty understanding the surrounding environment because the vestibular system does not function in a standard way, poor spatial control
- Difficulty in making automatic postural adjustments to maintain posture and stability in different situations and activities
What can we do?
Encourage activities that help develop the vestibular system.
- Activities that include swings, see-saws, ball, rocking horses
- Practice walking on curbs.
- Jumping, bouncing activities (sitting, kneeling or standing)
- Rocking activities (kneeling, sitting, lying face down or face up...)
- Slides on slides
- Jumps and bounces on cushions.
You can also invent games, such as painting lines or drawings on the floor with chalk and having him follow that line without leaving it.
2. HIGH SENSITIVITY
- Difficulty with sports activities, where we have to have control of our movements
- Difficulty suddenly stopping an activity
- Dizziness when we use any type of transportation
- Difficulty in activities where the head is not straight or the feet are not on the ground
What can we do?
You can help by dividing the activities into small steps, easier to manage and using, as we said in the previous case, chalk lines on the floor for depending on which activities. Take into account traveling on foot if it is not necessary to use the car. Don't force him to play sports he doesn't like just so he can "practice."
We recommend that you take a look at this website where you will find many objects and materials to work on the vestibular system: https://www.hoptoys.es/estimulacion-vestibular-c-816.html
